ISMAR7 AbstractNear Well Seismic Methods for Managed Aquifer Recharge: Perth Basin Western AustraliaBrett Harris+, Christian Dupuis+, Qin Li+, Michael Martin++, Henning Prommer+++ + Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia Near well acoustic methods include, Full Wave Form Sonic Wire-line Logging, Vertical Seismic Profiling and Cross Well Seismic Technologies. The information gained from such surveys can provide information concerning the mechanical and some hydraulic properties of rocks. Under certain circumstances acoustic methods can even be used to estimate hydraulic permeability. We consider data from multi-frequency full waveform sonic and vertical seismic profiling surveys completed at a managed aquifer recharge site in Perth Western Australia. In particular we analyse the technologies engaged (e.g. new equipment) and how these surveys can provide important information for Managed Aquifer Recharge projects. The injection interval for the MAR project site is the Wanneroo Member of the Leederville Formation. It consists of relatively thin highly permeability layers that are at most 5 m thick dispersed within much lower permeability layers. The Wanneroo Member is a highly heterogeneous aquifer system consisting of sandstone, siltstone and some shale layers. The aquifer zone is in the depth range from approximately 300 to 425 m below ground level. Of particular interesting within the Wanneroo Member are the very high permeability coarse sandstone layers. We demonstrate how both high and low permeability layers are expressed in the multi-frequency full wave form sonic wire-line logging data. Here we consider changes in velocity and amplitude with frequency for a range of seismic wave propagation modes. We demonstrate that when combined with other data sets the full waveform sonic and vertical seismic profiling data can provide information about seal strength and aquifer hydraulics. |
